Security, automation events and add-ons

Hi,

Visio 2003/XP Pro SP2

I'm using the automation in the timeline so I can slide the milestones
back and forth and the dates change automatically.

But, I have this problem on two computers where if I lower my security
to high and disable 'enable automation events' in options > security,
when I start Visio, it tries to run/install all the add-ins I have,
which is about 30 (and I don't know where they all came from; only a
few) - everytime I start Visio. This is no good.

If I increase the security to high, then the automation doesn't work.

Does anyone know how I can get it to stop running/installing all the
add-ins. It also seems to be every program I have in Desktop, where
my downloads go.

Thanks a bunch,

Michele

P.S. - All the other boxes are unchecked in the security window and in
Macro Security under Trusted Publishers, 'Trust all installed add-ins
and templates' is not checked, but 'Trust access to Visual Basic
Project' is checked.

It sounds like you have a surplus path setup.
menu Tools -> Options
Advanced Tab -> File Paths button

Check the paths for Addons and Start Up
They should either be blank or set to the paths of extra addons that
you know about.

Security set to High is normal.

You are changing two settings, but only one relates to security. The other
is essential for proper timeline functionality. Set your security to High
or whatever you are comfortable with. As mentioned look in the File Paths
and get rid of any paths you don't want or recognize.

Then make sure that "Enable automation events" is checked. Unless you have
a diagram that Visio is corrupting as soon as it loads, there is no reason
to uncheck this box. All of Visio's built-in add-ons (such as Org Chart,
Timeline) rely on automation events.

Hi,

My security is set to high and the paths for Addons and Start Up is
and has always been blank.

This has been a consistent problem for me across multiple computers so
I thought it was some kind of virus, but nothing shows up in anti-
virus or spam software.

It is really aggravating, as well as embarrassing in front of
customers when I have to tell them I need 10 minutes to change
security and reject/cancel all the addons trying to install before I
can use a feature.

Any further help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Michele

Is the startup shortcut ok, not having any odd paths, both as
parameters for the program itself and the startup folder.

Is it the same starting Visio from
a. a desktop icon
b. the Start menu
c. double-click on a .vsd file

What you are seeing is a classic symptom of the Startup path being set
incorrectly though.
