send/receive

I have just started using XP on a new computer. When I
open Outlook (which takes longer than with 98) I have to
click on the send/receive. Why?

Also, beside my account name on the XP login it continues
to display 1 unread message, but there aren't any to
open. Help!

Have you got Send Immediately checked, this is located Tools > Options >
Mail Setup.

As for the Unread mail try an Advanced Find for Unread items in that folder
