sent items sitting in OUTBOX DON'T WANT TO SEND!!!

I have a few items in the outbox that don't want to send.. it takes forever..
sometimes an entire day!
I have checked my norton's settings and everything seems to be fine..
i have disabled component for mail.. is there anything else I can do ?
I am not a tech geek.. so PLEASE bare with me!

Are there any errors reported during send/receive?
Disabling the component for mail in Norton is not enough to disable it.
Uninstall Norton, run their cleanup tool and then see if it works again. If
so, install Norton again but then without the mail component or switch to
another virus scanner vendor.
