Setting variable allocations for resources

I'm in the middle of scheduling a project that will require resources
to be scheduled in 2 12-hour shifts. Because we aren't going to
schedule at the individual level, I'm scheduling by crews. During the
day shift we have 7 crews for this contractor, so I'm assigning the day
shift at 700% allocation. The night shift has 3 crews for this
contractor, so I'm assigning the night shift at 300% allocation.

What I'd like to do is be able to get Project to just allocate the
resources from this contractor at 700% from 6AM - 6PM and at 300% from
6PM - 6AM.

Right now, the only solution I can see is to schedule with the resource
at 24 hours and then shuffle the assignments to the day shift or the
night shift till everything comes out right.

Is there an easier way to do this?

Any other ideas?

Hi Sntezky,

I would create two base calendars (Tools>Change working time), one calendar
for the "day shift" and one calendar for the "night shift".
Create your resources at 700% but select the "day shift" calendar as their
base calendar from the Base Calendar drop down list on the Resource Sheet.
Repeat for the other resources and select the "night shift" calendar as
their base calendar.

When you assign resources the schedule for the task will shift to align with
the resource's calendar.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

That isn't any different from what I had suggested above.
What I was hoping to do is persuade Project to do this for me as part
of the resource leveling process. Might have to figure out a way to
write something up in VBA, instead. Oh well. What we finally decided
to do is schedule as if we had 5 crews round the clock and just do a
rolling schedule, since most of the tasks had quite a bit of slack.

Hi Larry,

I'm sorry. I guess I misunderstood your initial question. The resource
calendars will "shuffle the assignments to the day shift or the night shift"
for you. The project calendar can still be the 24 Hours calendar but using
different base calendars for the 7 resources on days and the 3 resources on
night will schedule the tasks correctly.

Hope the clarification helps.
