Shaded gray area in middle of ruler...

Trying to remove this. Is it a set margin? A page break? I can alter the
width but not get rid of it altogether.

If it's in the middle, then you most likely are in a part of your document
set up as multicolumn. The gray in the ruler is showing/controling the
gutter. You can adjust it just the same as the margins - click when you get
the double-headed arrow, drag as you see fit.
