Shading of MergeFields

How do I apply background shading to a single mergefield when creating labels? I have only been able to get it applied to the whole table or the individual cell so far. I cannot find a field code for shading.

Which version of Word are we discussing? And have you tried Format/Borders and Shading, selecting the option to apply the shading to "text"?

Thanks Cindy! That did work. I was also able to get the shading by using the hilighter

I also need to figure out how do fix the length of the field so things align correctly on my labels. Another option would be to separately align each field on a line of the lable but that does not seem to work.

Well, what kind of alignment do you require? Can you describe in some detail what you need, and hwat you're currently seeing?

There's no way you can change the length of any merge field coming in, FWIW.

And, since this is getting a bit involved, which version of Word do you have?

Cindy,

Doug Robbins helped me out. See >
Left align the paragraph and insert a Right aligned tab stop at the position
where you want the number to be located and separate the mergefields with a
tab

This worked. BTW Word 2002

Thanks for your help!!
