Hi I have Visio 2003,

I have put a few new .vss files in my shapes folder, when i open Visio
I can Click File-> shapes -> and I have a list of the new shapes
there. I can click them one by one and they open in the left ahnd side
shapes toolbox. however when i close Visio and re-open it they are no
longer there I just have my stand shape sets and i have to click them
again to show up (They don't show up in search results either)

Is there a way to set the default shape sets that open on startup?

Two ways of doing this:

1. With a blank diagram, open the required stencils, menu File -> Save
and select "Template" and choose a suitable name. Ensure "Workspace"
is selected by the small black arrow to the right of the Save button.
Now when you start Visio using this template it will load the
stencils. But this works only with this template.

or

2. Try my utilities at http://www.visio-utilities.sandrila.co.uk/
It adds a new menu, one of which is SuperUtils -> Stencils -> Manage
startup stencils
Add the required stencils (you can add more than one at a time) and
make them and the list active.

thanks that worked a treat, next question, (its probably not possible)
but is there a way to have a particular template open by default
everytiem i open Visio? since I design for a company i always have to
use a standard template so it would save a few clicks by having it
open by default.

Yes, add a shortcut to the template to your desktop and always start
Visio by double-clicking on that shortcut.
