shared notebooks

Are all OneNote 2007 notebooks shared by default? I did not think my were
until I noticed "notebook A" had a duplicate and discovered that it was not
"synced with the local copy" because I was "offline," which I don't
understand, either. I use OneNote for personal use and don't share anything
on my computer with anyone. So how do I shut down/turn off, stop sharing
these files?

This OneNote novice would appreciate any assistance. Thanks in advance...

It depends on how you set up the notebook. If the notebook is on a network
drive or (I think) removeable media like a USB thumb drive, then it is
considered shared in the sense that another person or another copy of
OneNote could make changes to the Notebook and those changes would be
synced with your local copy. IIRC, Notebooks stored on the local hard
drive are not considered shared.

Actually, as I demonstrated in a recent video that I posted about sharing
notebooks, OneNote doesn't really have a "shared" status the same way
something like Windows File Sharing would. To OneNote, if the file is on the
hard drive, then it's just a notebook. The difference, like Erik said, is in
how you *open* the notebook from somewhere else.

Consider this. If you have Windows file sharing turned on and you've got
your whole My Documents directory shared, then you create a new OneNote
notebook in the default location, OneNote will just see it as a regular
notebook. Because that's all it is. The fact that it's accessible via a file
share isn't of interest to OneNote. But if on another computer (or even on
your own computer) if you browse to \\COMPUTERNAME\My Documents (or however
you have it shared) and open it through that path, then OneNote will open it
as a shared notebook and start merging changes into it. USB drives are
treated similarly.

Sorry about my delay in responding...

I've checked to make sure that all my files/folders (right click
drive/folders/files, etc.) to make sure they are all "not shared." Then just
to double check, I clicked on "Advanced Sharing" to make sure the "share this
folder" box was not checked.

So let me see if I got this straight... as long as these files/notebooks
are "not shared" and I'm the only user on the computer and therefor the only
user that has "Permission" to use it, then I <shouldn't> have a problem with
"where" I open a notebook? Otherwise, I'd have to open the program (OneNote)
first and then the notebook?

I had assumed that by checking the "I will use it on this computer" box in
the New Notebook Wizard that I would be the only one able to use it. But if
I understand correctly that's not the case. I still need to make sure that
it's "not sharing" by going to the Properties tab. That's easy enough to do.

But if I use the notebook any where else, for example a usb drive, then
OneNote will consider that to be multiple computers and/or users? And then
how do I properly sync the two(2)? Or will that happen automatically when I
plug in the USB drive and access a OneNote notebook?

Sorry... I just turned 1 question into 5 more...

I am have the same or a very miserable question. Somehow some of my folders
were set to shared. I don't want to share them anymore. Becasuse of the
sharing and that they no longer be sync'd I can not move them, delete them or
generally clean up my notes files. It also creates a file for syncing that
becomes huge, like 40-60 gig if I don't continually go and delete it (which I
think it the real cause of my access problem.)

I have created new stores for new notebooks and it seems OK until I move a
section from a shared notebook into a new clean notebook. After that every
notebook I put into the store automatically becomes shared, every section
becomes shared and every notebook I create from scratch is shared.

I have spent a few days now, and a few night fussin'with this and cannot get
a clean database of my old notes working without being shared. There is no
documentation other than break the share, but that does not work.

I understand if this deserves it's own thread, but I am at wits end right
about now.

Thanks for any help (BTW I have 5,000 .one files on my system now and
believe it or not I understand what they are and how to clean it all up but I
am not going to move through deleting and moving this stuff until I turn off
this sharing business.

I am using XP SP3 on my home PC which is on a small home network. I had a
laptop on that network and I tried syncing OneNote on only these two PCs. The
laptop is no longer on the network but the Home PC still thinks it needs to
sync ON notebooks with this computer. I don't remember which computer I used
to initiate the synchronization, quit possible both on at least some of the
notebooks. I have been deleting an automatically generated sync file created,
I assume, to facilitate the synchronization when the laptop shows up on the
network again.

I do not know how to tell ON I no longer want these notebooks sync'd. None
of the notebooks are in shared folders. I recently restructured my disk
system on the Home PC so that "My Documents" and all my notebook files are on
a new 380 gig disk separate from the system C: drive. I re pointed "My
Documents" and all my OneNote/Office files and parameters to this new drive.

I started a process where I closed all ON notebooks and created a new, not
shared notebook. I can put new sections and pages into that notebook and ON
does not want to share this notebook. As soon as I move a section or pages
from one of the existing notebooks the new notebook is marked as shared and
remains a shared notebook even when I remove the offending pages or sections.

My terminology about syncing and shared may not be the correct terminology.
By shared I mean that there is a red marker on the notebook name which, when
clicked gives me a message stating: "Onenote is working off line and is not
syncing changes to this notebook. Click to view sync status and settings"
When I click I get a panel that basically states "remote notebooks 0 up to
date, 0 syncing, 2 not connected.

My next step is to uninstall ON and reinstall it an the SPs, then try to see
if I can move at least some the sections/pages from notebooks in the old
installation. My guess is that it is the notebook that is marked for syncing
not the application and the new installation will pick up the marker and try
to sync them again.

I appreciate your help and hope I have been clear in the description of my
delema.
