Since when is Microsoft Outlook an active task

Dave Neve

Hello

My software that I use to safeguard files including Outlook .pst files
refuses to work with the .pst files anymore.

Outlook and its files are apparently being used by another program.

Never having had this problem before, I feared a virus but when I looked in
'active tasks', I saw

C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE

I'm pretty sure that this was never a task before, at least not when Outlook
wasn't being used by me.

So did the change come with an automatic update, why and can I just kill the
task when not using Outlook to do my safguard?

Thanks in advance

Hi Dave,

The task is Outlook itself. If you kill it, you'll quit Outlook. Could
it be the case that Outlook is no longer fully closing for you (Outlook
windows disappears though)? If that's the case, did you install any
add-ins recently?

Yep

Windows Live Messenger and Outclock (a French software to visit webmail
server and check for spam before downloading.

I seem to remember that during the installation of Windows Live, I saw sth
(a file or sth) with the word 'Outlook'

Thanks anyway

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click
either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Cover Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.
