Sorting

I have office xp. I'm new to excel and having trouble
sorting a column of names. The sort tool is grayed out no
mater what cell I select. If I start a new file its there
but I have already entered many names and do not want to
re type them. Can you help?

any chance the workbook is protected or shared?

Not that I am aware of. this is my first time using exel
and I just listened to the training cd so unless it came
that way I don't think so.

- does the title bar contain the word 'grouping'
- do you see the menu entry 'Tools - Protection - Unprotect Worksheet'
