SP3 Macro error(?) when opening SP2 files with security on them

I have a problem over here. Running Microsoft Project 2003 Pro and
recently (as in this week) installed SP3. We have many .mpp files over
here with security on them, saved with passwords. Now, when anyone with
SP3 installed tries to open a password secured .mpp file that was
created in SP2 it requests the password twice and then spits out a
error and then won't open the file. the error is:
------------------------------------------------
an unexpected error occurred during command execution.
try the following:

verify that all argument names and values are correct and are of the
correct type.

you have run out of memory. to free up available memory close programs
windows projects....
--------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT IS WORSE, is when i ask someone with SP2 to then resave the file
WITHOUT a password, it still won't open the file and spits out the same
error message. This seems a MAJOR flaw in SP3.

Any unsecured .mpp files open fine.

I then attempted the registry fix here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941466

and it now requests the password once, doesn't spit out the error
message, but the .mpp opens up to a new and blank document!!!

please help! we've got hundreds of these files and many of them are
secured and i can't uninstall the service pack.

Thanks
Lon

hi lkaiser,
I have a problem over here. Running Microsoft Project 2003 Pro and
recently (as in this week) installed SP3. We have many .mpp files over
here with security on them, saved with passwords. Now, when anyone with [...]
an unexpected error occurred during command execution.

I'm facing a fairly similar problem here. After upgrading to Project 2003
SP3 I can't open a large amount of the files that worked fine on SP2.
However my files aren't protected by any password (however they might have
been at some point).

The only way to get those files to work so far was:
- exporting them to XML and reimporting them (which seems to loose some
attributes)
- saving them as pj98 files in an SP2 Project (which might loose some
attributes)
All other means to work around this problem failed so far.
Any unsecured .mpp files open fine.

As stated this is not the case for me. Some not-too-complex files open fine,
but the major files don't.
I then attempted the registry fix here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941466

I tried that too, but it doesn't seem to have to do anything with the flaw.

Did you manage to get this problem fixed? It's strange only some people seem
to be facing this problem.

Kind regards,
Michael Leupold

Hey thanks for the reply and sry to hear you are having the same or
similar issues.
Haven't spent any time on the problem after i found myself stumped and
found nothing on the Boards. My brother is an Certified Trainer on
Project and he knew nothing about the issue, (except he knew enough to
not install SP3 and wait!!!!). I did find something similar to your
solution that if I saved the file under an older version of word and
removed the pwrd protection it was able to be opened.

let me know if you figure anything out please!
