spacing between footnotes

MS Word 2002 is putting an extra space between my
footnotes. The footnotes themselves are single-spaced,
and there should be no blank space between them, either.
What should I do?

Check the footnote text paragraph style for unwanted paragraph spacing.
I take it you are not adding an extra return when you insert the footnote
text?

I go to "Format" menu > "Styles and Formatting" > sidebar
pops up and tells me my footnotes are being formatted
as "Footnote Tex." I then choose "Modify" from
the "Footnote Tex" menu, and there does appear a button
marked "decrease paragraph spacing." Only problem is, this
button has no effect. Sample text already shows single-
spacing between notes, but I can't apply what I see to my
own notes. This one nitpicking problem is the only
obstacle to sending my book to the publisher! By the way,
thanks for your response, and sorry it took so long to
post again. I'm totally new to MS newsgroups.

Go to Format | Paragraph. Make sure there is no Space Before or After.

There wasn't - but I found the answer to my problem. Line
spacing was "single" instead of "exact." When I switched
to "exact" the extra space after each footnote went away.
