Spelling not working in excel

The spellcheck in excel has stopped working.

When you select it from the tools menu you get the message "The word could not be added to the custom spelling dictionary the word contains incorrect characters.".

I've checked the setting in word (as per the help menus) with no joy. I've also removed office (using the removal tool in the office directory in finder) and then reinstalled all the software, and loaded the update.

I still doesn't work.

Please help me out.

First - uninstalling and reinstalling is almost always a waste of time.
Apps just don't corrupt very frequently.

Do you mean that you get that message as soon as you choose
Tools/Spelling...? Or only when you try to add a word?

Does this happen with a brand new workbook, or only certain
workbooks/sheets?

Have you repaired permissions?

Have you tried setting/creating a new custom dictionary?
