Splitting work on task unevenly

I have a single task “Test Software” and resources “testers” tha
consists of 4 testers and contractors of testers that consists of
testers. I would like to have the work on the task applie
proportionally to the pool for tasks to complete ASAP.

A 100 hour test task either fixed units or fixed work with th
resources as testers[400%],contractor[200%] still results in the tim
split with 50 hours to each group. Is there any what to have projec
split the work proportionally with resource groups or do I have to loa
it at the individual level?

I am trying to have an “estimating” plan that has team responsibilit
not individual if possible. ? Ideas

Hello jprz,

The only semi automatic way would be to create 6 testers and assign
each of the 6. You might consider using the Group field on the
resource sheet to note whether the resources are internal vs.
external. By assigning each of the 6 in turn, project will split
the work in 6 even slices (16.67 hours per resource) and you'll get
the division you are seeking.

You can then apply filters and groups to see what each resource
group (internal or external) is assigned to and see the total hours
per group.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie thanks - Your suggestion is the only way I could find. I was
hoping to use Project as both an estimating and a staff loading tool for
a group size of 50+ without managing at the resource level. The groups
only works as a reporting view correct - not as an assignment level,
correct?

Hello jprz,

Yes, Resource Groups are for reporting purposes.

All may not be lost however. In further playing around, I found I
could generate the same answer -- Internal testers performing a
total of 66.67 hours of work for 4 resources and External testers
performing a total of 33.33 hours of work for 2 testers -- using
resource max. units above 100%.

Add the work field to the Gantt chart view table. Enter 100 hours of
work before making the first assignment. Split the screen to show
the Task Form and assign the Internal tester at 400%. The duration
of the task is calculated at 3.13 days. Then assign the External
testers and specify 200% assignment unit - the total work is divided
portionally - Internal testers (400%) showing a total of 66.67 hours
and External Testers (200%) showing a total work of 33.33 hours.
Duration of the task is recalculated at 2.08 days. Task type is
Fixed Units (default in Project) and effort driven.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
