Standard web width

I'm having a couple of web templates developed for me. One designer did it at
width 800, another at 851. In order to work for most people, what width
should one use?

In my opinion, in order to work with most people use a width of 760px.
Screen resolution is not the issue, it is how wide does the user open
their browser. About a quarter or more use 800px wide browsers, which
gives a display width (allowing for chrome and vertical scrollbars) of
760px.
