Is there any way to force Excel to maximize the window whenever it opens,
either from starting Excel or by activativating an excel file please. It is
irritating to open a file, maximise it and then when reopening at a later
stage it is back to a small window. Most of these files come in from other
users

Can i set an auto open macro on a custom template or if all else fails what
is the shortcut key to maximise

Try maximize>save>close excel>re-open

I have tried this but it does not appear to hold the settings. I am using
Excel 2000 service pack 4. It seemed to hold better before the latest service
pack. So that is why I am trying to think of other alternatives..

Do not Maximize.

Drag the Window to fit the screen then hold SHIFT key and close the file.

Sholud re-open at that size.
