Symantec Email Proxy Deleted Message - Need Patch

T

Terri

When email was deleted, users received a message that read "Symantec Email
Proxy Deleted Message". The flaw was first detected 14 October and Symantec
began issuing a patch for the problem last week, said Symantec UK company
spokesperson Katherine James.

This is what is happening to me, but I cannot locate the patch on Symantec's
website....HELP!

Milly:

I sure did read their web page - I tried the support and I even telephoned
them, but they do not know what I am talking about. This is a copy of the
report on the internet that I found: "Symantec has fixed an embarrassing
flaw in its Norton Internet Security 2003 suite that wrongly deleted email
before it hit a user's inbox.

When email was deleted, users received a message that read "Symantec Email
Proxy Deleted Message". The flaw was first detected 14 October and Symantec
began issuing a patch for the problem last week, said Symantec UK company
spokesperson Katherine James.

"We had a small number of users of Norton Internet Security 2003 who
reported that the product was inadvertently deleting e-mails," said Jones.

The flaw was attributed to the suite's anti-spam software. "If a user was
running the computer continuously and was receiving a large volume of
e-mail, or they had configured their e-mail client to check the mail server
frequently, the Norton Spam Alert could cause memory allocation errors,
which could cause the e-mail deletion," James said.

Symantec will not reveal how many users were affected by the problem, or
where they were located. "

I am receiving these emails AND some emails have been deleted before hitting
my inbox because I have people who have emailed me and the mail did not get
through. When I did not answer them, they called me.....

Rather frustrating and I do need some help!
Thanks!

We had a small number of users of Norton Internet Security 2003 who
reported that the product was inadvertently deleting e-mails," said Jones,
adding that the first incident was reported Oct. 14. Symantec issued a
software patch to fix the flaw earlier this week. The patch can be
downloaded through the application's online update feature, James said.

m to know anything about this...here is the story:

This began happening to me about 3 weeks ago!!!

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Norton AntiVirus 2003.
I have run LiveUpdate and am current.

At the same time this began Norton Internet Security stopped
automatically loading at startup. How does this service automatically
stop on it's own? I checked msconfig and the status of the Symantec
services were stopped. I did nothing to change this. I unchecked the
Symantec services, clicked enable all and restart my computer. This
is only way I can get Norton Internet Security to load at startup.
:::sigh:::

I realized this morning that all this began when Internet Security
started to mark emails with Spam Alert. I don't know if the problem
is connected, however I turned off Spam Alert this morning.

This is the 1st problem I've had with Symantec in over 8 years.
Would love a fix to this.

I have a similar problem:

Most of the incoming messages are deleted by SYMANTEC EMAIL PROXY. And
all I get is "Symantec Email Proxy Deleted Message" emails which are
clogging up the Inbox. It also started happening about a week ago, and
I see no other solution but to uninstall Norton Antispam (the latest
version), which was installed about a week ago... Most likely, I will
stop using Symantec products and move on to something like NOD32
(http://www.nod32.com/)
