Tabulation tribulation

Greetings,

I am a newbie here, using Word 2000 on XP Sp3.

How do I stop Word 2000 from demonstrating how very clever it is at
tabulating and auto completing numbers for me.

I have the default tab stop preset at 1.2cm and I start with the 'First Line
Indent' marker and the 'Hanging Indent' marker and the 'Left Indent' square
ALL at the extreme left side of the writing area (left end of white bar).

I wish to enter a number (happens to be a year) and then tab so that I can
begin to write a word starting 1.2cm across the page.
Then wish to use 'Enter', to drop down to the next line; then enter a number
(which is NOT n+1), tab again to align a word directly below the first word.

I DO NOT want Word 2000 to move: the 'First Line Indent' marker, and/or
'Hanging Indent' marker, and/or 'Left Indent' square and gratuitously add a
bold letter L in that square, when I hit the Tab or Enter keys on my
keyboard.
