Task duration and sub tasks

I am looking to create a subtask off a main task. After I input the duration
for the main task and proceed to input the sub-task, the dates change all
together and the main tasks duration changes and cannot be changed back. Why
does this happen and does that mean all subtask duration have to be in synch
with maintasks. Please assist.

Hello nancywg,
Don't input the Duration for the main task (Summary) : it'll be calculated
by MS Project in the light of all the subtasks beneath it.

As Gerard said, the duration and start/finish of a summary task are always
calculated values. The summary runs from the date the earliest starting
subtask begins until the last finishing subtask ends. Depending on links,
splits, lag times, or lead times in the subtasks it can be anything from the
the same as the longest subtask upwards.
