Task for full project

Hi all,

Usinf MSP'98.
I want to have a task which is spread across full project & ver
independant. Meaning it will have start date as project start date
end date as project end date.
It will have work indicated in hours which are also equally spread ove
the entire duration of the project.
I will create a macro which will update its %completion & %wor
completion equal to that of ActiveProject.
But how to define such a task ?

Thanks in advance

Dear Mike,
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I tried it. It works, but when I save or
close the file, it displays the screen of fatal error. The screen asks
me to send the error-report to Microsoft. And i am forced to terminate
the application. What can be the cause ?
Thanks for your timely help.

3326ubb,
Mike's out of pocket for several days. What exactly was your issue
again? Perhaps one of us can help.

Dear John,
Thanks. I wanted to have a task, a hammock task, in my schedule made in
MSP98. I did as directed in FAQ; item 19. Copied shortcuts first task &
last task dates to the hammock task's respective cells as explained. It
works well as long as I don't save my schedule. The moment I save the
schedule, a message is displayed which shows 'fatal error' & asks to
send error- report to Microsoft.
What is going wrong, where ? Do I need to reload some patch ?
Thanks for your help again.

3326ubb,
The only "patch" I know about for Project 98 is update SR-1 but I don't
know if it fixed anything that might relate to your issue.

Newer versions of Project (i.e. 2000 & up) have a Detect and Repair
submenu item under the Project menu but unfortunately Project 98 does
not, otherwise I would suggest trying that.

Setting up a hammock task requires the use of paste links which are
rather fragile. Most of the problems occur when paste links are used
between projects or with another application (e.g. Project and Excel).
They tend to get corrupt if not properly "cared for".

I suggest the following to see if it is a problem with your file or if
there is in fact a problem with your installation of Project 98 itself.
1. Create a new project file with two tasks.
2. Set up a third hammock task using data from the other two.
3. Save the file.

If it works OK, I suspect your original file has corruption. In that
case, you might want to read FAQ 43 - File Bloat? Might be corruption,
and see if using that technique will clean up the file. If your test
file also gives a "fatal error", you should try un-installing and
re-installing Project.

Hope this helps.

John,
It does not work, even in new file.
May be reinstalling is the only option.
Thanx.

3326ubb,
Just for reference, it is more difficult responding to a post if the
whole thread is not shown. We answer many posts and it is difficult to
keep track of the base subject matter if only the response is posted.

Before re-installing, I would try clearing corruption. If that doesn't
help, then go through the un-install/re-install process.

John,
Noted. I will include whole thread in my reply henceonwards.
Clearing corruption is not helping either.
Thanks for your kind help.

3326ubb,
Interesting term "henceonwards". If clearing corruption didn't help, I'd
go for the un-install/re-install.
