Task progress and (splitting) remaining work

Steve

Within a project, one task splits to show remaining work forward of the
status date (which is what I want to see) but others don't. They are simply
a continuous bar without a split from the end of the progress line, which is
behind status. So this suggests to me I've checked box(es) correctly on the
Tools-Options-Calculation tab (because one task splits) but I've missed
something with the others. Any suggestions please?

If only it was that easy! I have this same problem and seem to have tried
every combination of tick boxes but without success. When I update the
programme, asking for work remaining to start after the Status line the part
completed tasks will not split. Uncommenced ones go right of the line, but
commenced tasks stay put.

I'm using cost resources only.

Any other thoughts?

Regards, John.

Mike, thanks for coming back so promptly.

Before I move to add work resouces which will be a huge task (this is
already a 2600 line prog) and one I dont really want to do, let me explain
further what I'm trying to achieve.

My client is working on a large number of construction projects and has
established the budget costs for the various works and timings for each but
hasn't developed an overall programme for them all. That's what I'm aiming to
do in MSProject 2007. I hope it can then be used as a tool to monitor
progress and effect change.

To date I've put all of that information on a master programme with task
bars representing the works and have introduced the costs as cost resource
prorated onto each task bar. So far so good. In the Task Usage view I can see
the projected monthly costs, the costs to date, cumulative and remaining
costs etc. but now want to progress the works.

What I aim to do is enter progress as % complete for each task in a
reporting period (monthly), to reschedule the works and then hope to be able
to see change from the original budget and later, by shifting task bars, to
effect changes to the proposed spend. That's when it starts to fail me. I'd
certainly expected to see any part of a task bar not completed to become
split after rescheduling and for the remainder to move beyond the report date
(status line) but it doesn't and naturally nor does it redistribute the costs
as I had hoped.

That's where I am at the moment. With that in mind can I ask whether you
have any alternative suggestions to your first, please?

Regards, John.

You're right, I suppose I am looking for more of an accounting tool, but
you'll probably agree that this was a fairly simple concept and I just never
thought I was going outside the bounds of the software. I think I'll end up
having to manipulate more than I'd first thought but with a fair chance of
still getting where I want to be.

Thanks again.
