status date (proj pro 2007)

I can't seem to figure out how to use the status date to adjust tasks....and
I think this is something I can use....so I want to learn...from the project
help file I can see how this should change my tasks.

I went to Project/Options/Calculation and selected
- move end of completed parts after status date back to status date
-- and move start of remaining parts back to status date
- move start of remaining parts before status date forward to status date
-- and move end of completed parts forward to status date

my project start date is 10/31, current date is 11/7, and status date is
1/14. when I enter progress on a task as percent complete the task completed
work or remaining work does not get adjusted around the status date according
to the project/options/calculation settings.

Thoughts to get me started?

Maybe a bit confused, so could yu pelase clarify. Your start date for the
project is 31 October 2007?, the current date is 7th November 2007? but you
have the status date set to 14th january 2007 or 2008?

Setting the status date allows project to be able to automatically
reschedule incomplete activities to start the remaining portion of the task
to the status date. If the status date is beyond the current date then the
task could start on the current date. I believe you probably need to set the
status date to no later than the current date but later than the project
start date.

Hope this helps

sorry, a typo. status date is 11/14 (not 1/14). can the status date be
either before the current date....or after the current date?

The status date of 11/14 is not unreasonable... howerver, it means you are
asking people to predict where they will be on 11/14 when providing status...
that is a little far out. It might be more effective to status every week
sothe predictions are not that far into the future.

Also, the last two items of your post:

This means if you have a task with a scheduled start of 11/7 and your status
date is 11/14... if the manager tells you they are 15% Compelte then it will
show the start of the task on 11/14 with 15% Complete. This is not normally
done...keep the 11/7 date (that is, uncheck this option).

Also, if a task is scheduled to run 11/1 to 11/7 and a status date of 11/14.
This would push the end date of the task from11/7 to 11/14. Again, not
usually done (uncheck this box).

Does your schedule look better now?

Clarification -
Unfinished work between the %Complete bar and the status date is rescheduled
to after the status date. This is better accomplished from Tools/Tracking
but could be done here.
