Tasks which cannot happen at the same time

Hi, I'm new to Project and apologise if this is a stupid question.
I've got Project 2002 if it makes any difference.

I have two tasks which can happen any time within my project except at the
same time as each other. They are both assigned the same resource. Only 1
person can do each task at any one time, and there are two people available
to do the task. This means that when I level the tasks they get assigned to
be done at the same time as each other. How do I constrain them so that they
do not happen together without saying that one has to be done before the
other, because I don't know which way round is best for the system?

Thanks
Helen

Hi,

Think of why the tasks cannot be done simultaneously and simulate that.
For instance, if both tasks need a certain unique piece of equipme,nt, add
that as a resoruce to both tasks.
Then insofar the leveling option "Leveling can adjust individual
assignments..." is off, you will have your reply.
Hope this helps,

Hi,

This seems to help, but not quite solve the problem. It has not moved the
two tasks so that they are not at exactly the same times, but do overlap
slightly. I have assigned an equipment resource to both tasks, as you
suggested. I have looked at the resource views, and it does not appear that
the equipment resource is ever overallocated, which I do not understand if
the two tasks are overlapping. My tasks are not effort based, so as far as I
am aware, the task is not now split between the man and the equipment, and
the equipment is used for 100% of both of the tasks. Thoughts please.

Thanks
Helen

Hi,

They probably aren't overlapping but stop/start in the middle of a day.
Then in a timescale with day as the minor scale they may seem to overlap.

If the tasks aren't dependent on each other, you have two resources, and
each task can use either resource, why can't they happen together? What
prevents Joe from working on Task A while Mary is working on Task B?

Steve,

As Jan mentioned before, the equipment is the constraint. I need two tasks
to be performed at some point during the course of the project and I don't
really care when, but they both have to happen with the person doing the task
using the same piece of equipment, of which I only have one piece. I have put
an equipment constraint in and this has solved the problem.

Thanks
Helen

IC, then as Jan suggested, assigning the equipment as a work resource, 100%,
and leveling will sequence the tasks.
