Template from a Hyperlink

I have a word document menu, with hyperlinks, which opens other word files
within my folder structure. One file that is being hyperlinked to is a .dot
template.

My understanding of templates is that you execute the .dot file to produce a
..doc file. The hyperlink to the .dot opens the template as the original
..dot, not a .doc. What's the correct procedure for word templates?
