If you studied English composition in school, you should
easily be able to compose your own message in Microsoft Word.

Does nobody write their own letters any more? The number of requests we see
on this group for a template for a perfectly simple business letter is
appalling.

Judging from the amount of requests for simple templates, maybe MS should
discontinue templates altogether as the seem to be making people dumb and
lazy. The amount of time spent looking for a template they could have been
finished already if they had just done it themselves.

Gordon,
Some people may be looking for an example to see how to layout the
business letter and communicate effectively.

The negative and sarcastic remarks are also appalling

If you feel templates make people Dumb and Lazy then consider how computers
and programs have been automated to make simple task even simpler. Since you
feel they discontinue templates then maybe they should discontinue program
automation since it might people dumb and lazy. Do you use the rightclick
menus, Quicklaunch, shortcuts.....?

Are people Dumb and Lazy because they use HTML editor such as FrontPage that
creates the HTML code for them?

There are other sources of templates besides MS and templates help people
get started as well as learn how to use some features of a program. If
templates make people dumb then why do so many programs offer the option to
save a document as template? so they can save time and use it over again to
create new documents therefore increasing productivity.

You don't think it's pretty sad that someone needs a template to write an
invitation to a party?

Com'on man.

Yah sure templates have a function to help people get started I use them all
the time...but to write a simple letter? How many times have you had someone
send you a Word file that was formatted using the space bar a hundred
times?...and they've been using Word for 10 years!

Yep templates save you time...but if you're searching around newgroups and
forums for 3 hours to find a template to write a simple letter...that's not
saving time...just jump in and write the damn letter.

So if they have to ask for a template, how do they KNOW that what they have
got IS "effective communication" if it's been written by someone else? If
they are in a position whereby part of their job is to write such letters
then they are either not qualified to do the job, or they are just lazy,
IMHO

Templates are nothing to do with learning a program - and all about writing
your own language! If you need a template to write a (reasonably) simple
letter in your native language, then IMHO you are not qualified to do the
job you are in and need lessons in your native language NOT in IT.

=================================================
No because my Mom has needed a card at the last minute because she didn't
have time to buy one then again wouldn't buying a card be the similar to a
template? I personally have used templates because I didn't have time to
start from scratch or need one for particular occasion or person that I
couldn't come up with any creative ideas at the time.

What may be simple to you is not always simple to others. A personal letter
is simple but creating a professional looking and effectively communicating
business letter is not always simple unless you are doing it on regular
basis.

=====================================================
In most cases letter templates are written by professionals and I believe
are written to give an example effective communication.

If
they are in a position whereby part of their job is to write such letters
then they are either not qualified to do the job, or they are just lazy,
IMHO
==============================================
There are people whose job is to write such letters that use templates
because they don't want to repetitively write form letters, which makes one
more productive and not lazy.

Gordon,
READ this post again I'm making a point about using templates in
general not a simple letter template.
You ever bought a greeting card ? It's simple to create so does that mean
you are lazy and can't do your job? No.... Buying a greeting card is no
different than a person using a Simple Letter Template as you put it.

Offer positive help and make someone's day in a small way today.

I think it's sad when I give correct change for a purchase and if the
clerk doesn't enter the amount in correctly they need to search for a
calculator. I also think it's sad when someone requests a template to
write a simple letter too.

I don't think is computers or MS that's dumbing us down, I think our
school systems are responsible. For example some school supply lists
include a calculators for students entering 2nd grade. Sheesh, they're
just starting to learn simple math counting on their fingers!

I know what you are saying, but a template is needed for the example
you used. ;-) Invitation envelopes are typically 3 7/8 x 6 1/2. Some
are created by folding a standard sheet of paper into quarters and
some use paper stock sized for invitations. Some may not know how to
create a custom paper size or you may need to rotate text/images for
them to print correctly.

I'd say some might need them.

A bank teller in my area was recently presented with this note: "This
is a stick up. Be quit"

After his arrest and they found this note in his pocket: "Give me the
money or I'll shot you".

~Beth Melton

R

there was one like that on the news not too long ago, the robber didnt get
any money because the teller couldnt decipher what the note said.
