Text in Word appears inside a box and cannot be edited or selecte.

Currently have a document that when I click on any of the text in the second
page. a box appears around the text and will not let me edit anything on the
document.
The box has handles in all four corners and in the mid-points and will
distort the text as if it were a graphic.

I also get a message that states " This is an imported picture, not a group.
Do you want to convert it to a Microsoft Office drawing object ?

I selected it and the entire text area is now broken up into a couple dozen
overlapping text boxes. And when I try to type to make my changes it enters
the text under the the other text boxes.

It would appear that the text on that page has been pasted in as a picture.
