while trying to enter numbers, the highlighted cell moves left with 6, up with 8 and so on. the numbers at the top of the keyboard work fine. I have tried removing the PLIST for Excel, completely reinstalling Office. checked system preferences. Excel works fine with all the other users of this computer.

Sounds like you've engaged the numlock (exactly how depends on your
machine/keyboard combo).

FWIW, reinstalling Office is one of the most ineffective things you can
do to try to fix a problem. Applications just don't corrupt. The only
reason it *sometimes* works in Windows is that the installer rewrites
registry entries (roughly equivalent to deleting preferences on the Mac).

On full Apple keyboards, the Num key is located above the 7 in the numeric
keypad, and must be used in conjunction with the Shift key to change the
keypad's behaviour. You can see the direct effect of the key combination on
the NUM dot at the bottom of the spreadsheets (green = numerics, grey =
cursors).

Great! I had the same problem and the Shift-Clear key combo solved it.
