This one is a doozy. I've talked to three experts on
windows and word, and no-one has ever heard of this
before.

I have windows XP with office 2000

When I try to open a word document I get the message "The
file (file name) is not available." I get this message
with every word file. I have tried multiple paths to
these files. They are there. It won't open files from a
disk either, and those files on the disk open on other
computers.

I have tried reinstalling the software. I have tried
uninstalling recently installed programs that may be
conflicting with it. I have tried running Norton to see
if I have a virus. I don't. I have recently updated
office. Could these updates be conflicting with word? I
don't see why since microsoft put them out. I don't know
what else to try. Suggestions? Anyone?

Hi Tim,

Can't say it's a 'doozy' nor a challenge - we answer this question
several times a day. :) (Now when it first occurred after the release
of Office XP SP-2 it was a challenge! lol)

The problem is due to Norton perceiving opening a file as a 'threat'.
Disable the "Office Plug-in" option in Norton and all should be well
again.

Is there a similar conflict with McAfee VirusScan. Word
locks up very often for us, sometimes when opening,
sometimes while working on a document, sometimes while
running spell check.
