Titles and content of a document

M

Michel

Hi all,

A document has a title. Chapters and paragraphs have titles. When I generate
the content part of a document I would lik to see the titles of chapters and
paragraphs. What I don't want to see are the title and subtitle of the
document. How can I accomplish this?

Background:
In the past I had two documents. One only containing the title of the
document, and some contact information. The other document contained the rest
of the document. I am thinking the same should be achievable in one document,
without the document title appearing in the contents part of the document.
How do I realize this?

Beth,

Yep, that is what I mean. Couldn't find the right word, because I am not
using the English version of Word, and couldn't find the right translation.

I'm not sure if you found what you were looking for but if you utilize
the Heading styles Word can automatically generate a TOC for you.

Here's a training article that should help you out:

Beth,

Thanks for the feedback, but I am quite capable in generating a table of
contents. The question I have is why are the title and subtitle of a document
generated in the Table of Contents aswell? When I have a book (or document)
in my hands I can swith to cover to look which book (or document) I am
holding. The document title is not something I expect in the TOC.

My question was, what do I need to do to NOT get the title and subtitle of
the document in the TOC?

Regards,
Michel

Now I understand what you are asking. :)

This is because the style you are using for the title and subtitle
include an outline level or are based on one of the Heading styles
which include an outline level.

If you are using the built-in Title and Subtitle styles then they are
associated with Outline level 1 and Outline level 2 respectively. To
correct, modify both styles and in the Format/Paragraph dialog box set
the Outline level to "Body text".

Hi Michel,

What version of Word are you using?
If the title of your document and subtitle are
at the top of the document and you're using
a 'create from Styles' table of Content you
could create a different style for those
two headings and then not include that style
in what is picked up from Insert=>Reference=>Index and Table
TOC build.
