Toolbar icons disappear in Word 2008

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

Hello there.
I would like to report a somewhat "bug" in my version of Word 2008 (I haven't noticed the problem in the other Office apps).
I have a white MacBook running on OS X 10.4.11. The current version of Word is 12.0.1 (080305).
Now for the problem - when I open a new document and start typing, the icons on the top toolbar disappear. After a while of more typing, even the "dot buttons" (quit, minimize, maximize) disappear as well as the bottom change layout view menu. The Formatting palette is okay...
When I hover over the things, they appear again (for instance, over the dots or the top main toolbar)... Why does this happen?
If there is a solution to this, please, help me.

Hi Kuka,

You said you were Slovak in the other post--is your OS set to Slovak?

Can you test if switching the OS to English makes the problem go away?

A guy who posted these screenshots said it went away when he switched
the OS to English, he had the OS on Polish. OS 10.5, though, so his
issue might be different, but his description--missing and translucent
toolbars--sounds like your problem.

Hi!

Thanks for your quick reply (;
I checked the screens, but I have a tad bit different problem. The toolbar doesn't disappear, only the icons do. So the toolbar looks "empty" or "blank" :p

Well, the language of the OS is English (there isn't a Slovak localization for OS X) but I do have Slovak on the first place in my "International" prefpane...?

Oh well... don't worry *that* much. When I hover over the icons with the cursor, they kind of get back again (for a while).
It's just kind of annoying, that's all.

Well--do try the standard diagnostic tricks--if any of these works, then
that's a big clue--

Diagnostic tricks to help locate the cause of the problem:

1) hold down shift while launching Word. If the problem disappears, it
was probably due to a corrupt Normal template of Preferences.

2) Log out of your user account, then hold down shift while logging back
in. If the problem disappears, it is probably due to some conflict with
the login items/utilities in your user account.

3) create a new user account in OS X and test in that one. If the
problem disappears, then the installation is fine but some user-specific
file has corrupted.
