Total Slack on Summary Bars

I have been asked by a program manager how total slack is calculated on
summary bars using Project 2003. I've looked thru Project books but don't
see the answer anywhere.

Betsy,
Like its subordinate elementary tasks, the total slack of a summary is the
amount of time the summary can drift without postponing the finish date of
the project.

The calculation for slack is:

Total Slack = Late Finish - Early Finish

which is exactly the same as what Gérard said in words.

The summary bars by default show the MAXIMUM amount of Slack of the subordinate tasks. This is useless to a scheduler, you need to show MINUMUM slack as this will show you where problem areas are.

Until I find how to change this setting, I set a custom duration field to equal the Finish Slack and tell it to show minimum on the summary bar.

Insert a new column: duration1.
Right Click on duration1 column, Customize Fields
Select Duration1 Formulae - OK to resetting it
Insert Field Duration Finish Slack
Rollup, Minimum - OK

Does anybody know how to set the summary slack to read the minimum amount of
its subordinates? The help file quotes about how it is calculated do not
apply to summary bars.

Please send me the exact formula you are using to rollup the minimum float
value. I have tried several variations on what I think it should be based on
the instruction and just get syntax errors.

Thanks

Hello Dave,

The formula is:

[Total Slack]

no leading equal sign. In the customize dialog set the rollup for
summary to "minimum". Place the formula in a spare Duration field
(Duration1 for example.)

The field (duration1) should now match the value of the total slack for
each task and the summary task should now show the lowest total slack of
any of its subtasks.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
