Track Changes options not staying

We're on Word 2003, and my boss is having problems with track changes. When
she sets the options for insertions and deletions in Options and clicks OK,
it doesn't save her changes. She goes back into Track Changes Options, and
everything is back the way it was before. Any idea what could be causing
this?

Hello,

I have a computer in my organization with the same problem. I'm very
interesting to hear the solution

Thank you

Well, we've fixed it, but I don't know for sure how. I noticed that her page
numbers were not showing up, that it was showing the page number field code
instead. So I went to Tools > Options > View and unchecked the Field Codes
box. This fixed the page number problem and from that point forward, the
Track Changes started to work again as well. I have no idea why the Field
Codes box being checked would affect Track Changes, and I can't recreate the
problem on my PC.

A lot of the settings in Tools > Options are changed from the default.
Something happened to her settings over the weekend that changed them all.
And now she's having another problem: when she's inserting a hyperlink into
an email in Outlook, it again shows the field code instead of the hyperlink.
But when she goes to Tools > Options to try to uncheck the Field Codes box,
it won't allow her to make a change. When she hits OK, an error message
comes up saying, "Number must be between 1 and 1638." Something very weird
is going on. I'm going to see if our IT people will just reinstall Office
and see if that fixes it. You might try the same.

Most of the settings in tools > options (and a few others besides) are
stored in the Word data key in the registry. It is not unheard of for the
settings here to become corrupt. Rather than re-install the application
(which would not fix this) it would be worth you (or your IT support)
deleting the data key and allowing Word to rebuild a new one with default
settings - the key is identified at
http://www.gmayor.com/my_toolbars_are_missing.htm . You will have to restore
the preferred settings ij toiols > options thereafter.

Word 2003 also has a tendency to change random settings in the options
(probably through the interaction of add-ins, though we haven't been able to
tie it down) if that is occurring the only real cure is to set the
preferences for each new and opened documents with auto macros. There are
some examples at http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm

The fields code display is a toggle setting (ALT+F9).

A look through http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm then
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm is advised
following any crash and ensuing problems.
