Track functional time versus calendar time

Embarrassingly stuck because I'm sure this is easy and I'm just having a
brain cramp. How do you have Project track functional time vs calendar time
at the task level? For example, I have a task that starts 2/1/08 and ends
3/1/08 but will really only involve about 40 hours of the analysts time. How
do I get Project to recognize the 40 hours versus the calendar hours but
still show the correct start and finish dates.

Hello,
i'm afraid you are confusing Duration and Work.
Did you assign the Analyst resource on that task?
40h of Work spread over a Duration of 21 days = assignment at 27%
Display the Work column (and/or the Actual Work) in any table or in the Task
