tracking just percentage complete

I have been tasked with making a progress report showing percentage complete.
I have grouped the tasks into subtasks but left the duration at 1d? It's just
that the percent complete isn't accurate. I have a task of say lighting. It
has 2 subtasks of isntallation and hook-up, each of these worth 50% of the
total task. The problem arrises, I think, because the two items take
different amounts of time to complete and since I am not entering work
complete to get the percent and just entering the percentage it is throwing
off the calculation.

Any ideas on how to complete this report?

Oh and is there a way to upload the file so anyone can see it?

andre,
Well, if the duration is still 1d, then it doesn't sound like you have a
valid schedule structure, unless of course your tasks are in fact only a
day in duration.

And I think you are a little confused about how Project uses duration.
In Project, percent complete is strictly duration based, so if you have
two tasks and each is "worth" half the total summary line, then both
tasks by definition have the same duration.

Duration is the time period during which a task will be performed. Work
on the other hand is the effort required by one or more resources to
actually accomplish the task. For example, you might have two tasks each
with a work content of 40 hours, yet one task may be completed in 1 week
and the the task might take two weeks. All that really means is that the
first task is probably being worked full time and the second task is
being worked half time.

With regard to uploading files I assume you mean to the newsgroup. We
request that you do NOT upload files to the newsgroup. It causes some
readers, (including some who respond to questions), problems with
downloading. If we believe we can better help you by actually seeing
your file, we will provide the necessary information so you can send it
directly to us.

John,

Thanks for your reply. It led me to a somewhat better understanding. I shall
work on it some more. I was trying to get a %complete without having to enter
durations, so everything was equal.

Andre,
You're welcome. Many new users are confused about the difference between
duration and work. If you have any further questions, post again.
