Trouble creating network

S

Sarah

Hi,

I apologise for posting this request to this newsgroup, but I've had no luck
posting it to the general mac group and I really need some help with
something. This group has been so helpful in the past I thought I'd give it
a shot. Specifically:

I have been successfully creating a wireless network (using airport) for
more than a year between my iMac (base station) and my PowerBook. Suddenly
it's not so successful anymore. I'm using OS 10.2.8.

The details:
I turn on Airport in the iMac, then on the PB. I go into the airport menu on
the iMac and click on "create network". My usual dialog box comes up showing
the option of creating an iMac network, channel set to "automatic". I click
OK, and then normally it "takes". Now it's not and I don't know why. I'm
seeing new stuff in the airport menu (new neighbour's networks maybe?) and
even though I am asking it to create an iMac network, it keeps defaulting to
"linksys" and won't come out of it. My PB doesn't pick this up so can't join
it. When I go into Internet Connect I see that "Base ID is not available".

Can anybody help me with this? My work has no Mac support so this posting is
my only hope!

Oh, one more detail: I downloaded the most recent security update a few
weeks ago. But I have set up my network successfully since then -- this
problem just started on Friday of last week.

Thanks,
Sarah

I've never tried to do that, but is it possible that the other network
you are picking up is using the same channel you are ??? I would try
creating a network on a different channel.
I had a more or less related problem at home (performance and connection
drops) and it turned out to be interferences with another new wireless
network using the same channel. Give it a try anyway, it can't hurt :-\

Hi Corentin,

Thanks for this. I tried each channel one by one until it seemed to work,
but then it reverted to this "linksys" network even before I had a chance to
finish breathing a sigh of relief. I wish I could figure out what's going
on...and now I've fiddled with the settings so much I don't even know
anymore what worked in the first place.

I think my home-networking days are over!

Are you setting it up through the Internet Connect utility or through
the Network prefpane ??? I always, a;ways had mubch better luck through
the pref pane...

Hi,
To be honest I don't even know anymore -- it's all a big mess now since I've
been trying to fix it. I've made changes in both Internet Connect and the
Network pane and I don't have a clue how to get it back to what it was, let
alone getting it to work again.
Best,
Sarah

Try leaving the Internet Connect app alone, create a new "Location" in
the Network prefpane and enter the information about your default
wireless network there. Hopefully, it should work :-\
