Trusted template?

I'm trying to save a template to be one of "my templates".
the popup box says to open file menu, pick "trusted template" and save as a
template.
BUT there is no place that I see "trusted templates" in the save-as box.
The template will save, sure -- but just into the same directory I put it in
before.

Somehow I got this done on my other computer when I switched from 2007 to
2010 and updated the templates but now I'm stumped.

What am I missing?

Alternatively, how can I attach this template from the directory it's in (a
topic-specific document directory) to new documents I'm creating.

Thanks for any help.

If you don't see "Trusted Templates" (or "Templates" in some combinations of Word version and operating system), you'll have to manually locate the user templates folder. You can look in the File Locations dialog box to find out the path to that folder (in File tab | Options | Advanced, click File Locations).

Thanks. They certainly do hide it don't they!
(a little like the nuclear med dept at the hospital -- down at the bottom at
the end of a long hall....)

The only reference to templates in the save-as box that I could find would
just save the document as a template in the directory it's already in.

I somehow managed to find the "trusted" directory & copy over my templates,
though I think I'll keep a copy, as well as the "old" versions, back in the
project folders -- where at least I'll be able to find them again. :)

I do wish the "help" pages wouldn't tell you to choose something that *isn't
there*. Maybe the help-writers are using a different version of the program
or something? or they wrote the pages before the final version was done?

Thank goodness for newsgroups & people like you who are still here!

I'm glad I could help!

As far as Word Help is concerned, I believe the search function is the biggest problem. It simply doesn't list topics that are relevant for a particular search! :-( So, for all that we know, the topics could be perfect, telling us everything we want to know, but they are hiding in a place where no one will ever find them... :)

==================================================

Well, I found another misleading "help" item, looking for how to attach a
new/different template to a document.

Search found the right topic, alright (only the 4th item down using <attach
template> to search) -- but then proceeded to refer to things that Aren't
There --
e.g.
"You can attach a new template to a document. To do that:
.... •in Word 2007 and Word 2010, on the Developer tab, click Document
Template (if the Developer tab is not displayed, click the round Office
button, click Word Options, click Popular, and then on the right of the
dialog tick "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon")."

Which isn't where I found it -- am I missing a round button or something?
I found it in the File section under Options -- Customize ribbon.
But at least I'm learning how to hunt these things down -- sortof.

This continues to make me think they aren't working off a current copy of
the software when they write their "help" pages. :)
Time to hit the Big Fat Book.

Thanks again for your help & for *being here*.

Ribbon customization is new in Word 2010, as you probably know. They missed that in Help. <sigh>

I'm still having trouble figuring out the Ribbon & where things are.
Thank goodness someone told me about the QAT (back when I went from 03 to
07) or I'd be *really* lost.
I just wish the QAT icons were *bigger* -- my old eyes spent a lot of time
squinting.
<sigh> indeed.

Indeed, the QAT buttons can't be made larger, which you could do with the toolbar buttons in Word 2003 (in Tools | Customize).

What you can do is make use of the accessibility options in Windows. For example, the Magnifier can be used to enlarge parts of the screen.
