Two finger scrolling on the MacBook pro doesn't work well in Word

I am using the latest version of Word 2004 for Mac OS 10.4.6 on a MacBook
Pro. The MacBook Pro allows one to scroll up and down pages in any
application by dragging two fingers instead of one. This feature works
beautifully in every application I have tried except Microsoft Word. In
Word, it lets you scroll up the page just fine, but when you try to scroll
down (by dragging your fingers down the mouse pad), there is a problem. If
you scroll slowly, it actually scrolls in the opposite of the intended
direction in a very jerky manner. If you drag quickly, it is very jerky and
impossible to make it stop where you want it to.

Once one gets used to two finger scrolling, it becomes habitual, and it is
quite annoying to constantly have it not work. Could you please fix this
issue?

Much thanks.

It may not be obvious (and usually it doesn't matter), but these NGs are
most PC-oriented. For Mac-specific NGs, see
