Two line captioning?

B

Blake Fry

Is it possible to have a caption on two lines? I would
like to have a caption like:

Table 1
Table Title

but I can only get it to caption like:

Table 1 Table Title

where later when the document is finished (and all the
rearranging) I have to go back and manually separate the
lines in the text and make sure that there are no
subseqauent field updates that would cause it to revert
to the original.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Blake

There are probably other ways to do this, but this is how I achieve what you want.

Abandon the use of the Insert > Reference > Caption idea. In 99% of cases, the in-built caption functionality works brilliantly. But
it doesn't work too well for what you want. Instead, create a style and number it (so that Table 1 is numbered in the same way you
might number a heading style as, say, Chapter 1 or Section 1). Then, you can apply your style to the paragraph, it will say Table 1,
you press Shift-Enter to create a new line and type your title.

To set up your numbering, follow the instructions at http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. That page
talks about heading styles, and you could use a heading style (Heading 4, say, if you have 3 levels of heading in your document).
Or, you could use your own custom style (called, say, TableTitle or some such). The principles for setting up the numbering are the
same. Before you abandon the idea of using a heading style for table titles, have a look at
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/UseBuiltInHeadingStyles.html.

Hope this helps.

You can have as many TOCs in a document as you like. You can base them on
specific styles or outline levels (or TC fields) or you can limit them to a
certain bookmarked section. See
