Unable to highlight and then type over

T

When I use Word and type a sentence, then go back and highlight what I have
already typed to replace it by typing over the highlighted text, what I type
is instead inserted before the highlighted section.

Another example of the problem is when I highlight some text and then press
the Backspace key to delete it, the curser in brought to the right side of
the highlighted text and the highlighted text is unhighighted but remain. It
is not deleted as it should have been.

I have had to use the delete key that still works when I highlight text as
above.

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing replaces
selection" box | OK.
