Unable to open attachments in Outlook 2003 email

Unable to open anything other than .pdf files in Outlook 2003. Recently updated from Office 2000 using Outlook Express to Office 2003 using Outlook. Am no longer able to open Word, Excel or other file attachments, except .pdf attachments. Suggestions?

When I click on the paper clip, Word and Excel attachments shown in grey, and do not open when I click or double click on them. Only able to open .pdf attachments. This problem began as soon as I upgraded Office Pro 2000 with Office Pro 2003, and began using Outlook 2003 for my email, replacing Outlook Express 6. My business requires that I be able to make red line changes to Word and Excel documents. Easy solution, I hope?
