unable to open "existing web" error

T

tuffy2

I published my web site from a desktop computer. I then
decided to do all of my maintenance from my notebook. I
installed FrontPage 2002 on the notebook, but now it won't
open the publishing destination of my existing web site.
Any help?

Under Control Panel, Internet Options (or in IE, Tools, Internet
Options) click the Connections tab and check your Dial-Up And Virtual
Private Network Settings.

If it's Never Dial A Connection, you need to either change it or open
the connection manually before publishing.

If it's one of the others, check your Dial-In settings.

.
The error says "could not find a web at server www.my
web.com.
The possible causes listed are:
1. No frontpage extension at server
2. web out of service
3. proxy settings are wrong.
4. error in web ser ver.

The thing is, FrontPage isn't even trying to dial my dial
up connection. I have no proxy server setting checked. It
just defaults to this message when I try to publish to
http://www.my web.com.
It is as if Windows 98 has something set to default to an
internal server instead of dialing out to my server.

Try opening IE and connecting to web (thru your DUN)
Then try opening FP and File Publish

| "always dial my default" is checked. I don't have any
| problems with any other dial up programs. FrontPage
| doesn't even try to dial when I enter in the publish
| destination of"http://www.my web". It is as if there is a
| setting in Windows 98 that is telling FrontPage not to
| dial into my default, even though the settings all look
| correct.
| There are no proxy settings checked. ??

That got me past the error message. It then asked me my
user name, password, and domain. After entering this info,
it shows that the modem is active, but it keeps on
exchanging data without ever opening the "publish
Destination" box to begin publishing. It keeps this up
indefinitely, showing modem activity but not really doing
anything.

If you have a large Web site, it may take quite a while to
download an entire directory listing of its contents.

FrontPage has to download information about *every* file in
the remote Web for comparison with the local Web. This is how
it figures out which files it needs to publish.

I just realized that your name matches the name on the
front page of my FrontPage manual. I am thrilled to have
you working on this. Thank you.
When I publish changes on my home computer, which uses XP,
all goes fine. The update takes about 5 minutes, maximum.
When I have tried to get my IBM ThinkPad to publish the
same web, it runs for hours with no results. I have never
successfully published this web on my ThinkPad. I have now
reloaded my FrontPage many times, and more recently I have
reformatted my C: and started over with no better results.

Compare the network settings between both machines and since you have had multiple publishing failures find and delete all FP Temp
files and hidden *.web files before you open your FP web site

I suppose I am resigned to the fact that my Windows 98
Notebook isn't going to let me publish this web. Now my
problem is this; I activated/registered FrontPage 2002 on
the internet on my notebook, which won't publish my web.
My Desktop computer with Windows XP will publish the web,
but I have only a few more times left to open FrontPage
before it has to be activated. How do I switch activation
from one computer to the other?
Also, is there any way to put a hit counter on each of my
9 pages of my web in a hidden format and check them
remotely without visiting the web and adding to the hit
counter?
Thanks for the help!!
