Unable to open files from within Office while connected to interne

I have a PC where if the computer is connected to the internet (dial-up),
then any Office application is unable to browse for files from the file/open
menu

click File then open
then click on the down arrow at the end of the "Look in:" drop down list,the
application freezes. If the pc is not connected to the net then it works fine.

The drop down list works from any other application while connected to the
internet just not MS Office.

PC is running Office and Windows XP.

Sounds like something evil is communicating to the Net. I would run the AV
and anti spyware programs in Safe Mode if I were you.

Are you using a mapped Web Folder that has been disconnected? Try unmapping
it.
