Unread Count

Neil McLoram

My unread count for this newsgroup reads over 4,000. I¹ve selected all,
marked as read but the figure still remains. I can¹t see any unread
messages. Anyone help me understand what¹s going on?

Many thanks.

Entourage stinks at unread message count in the newsgroup view. You learn to
just ignore the count. If you click on More and then select mark all as
read, eventually you can get the count to zero, but the next thing you know
it¹s showing incorrectly again.

The Entourage newsreader is like a poor orphan child. It has never been
updated or improved since it was introduced. However, it easy to use and
much nicer than the Mactopia forum interface. You can search using Spotlight
too.

Many users like Thunderbird as a newsreader.

In my experience, it is only the Microsoft newsgroups(!) at which Entourage
has trouble with the count. It counts other newsgroups I've used just fine.

The solution is *not* to Select all and Mark read but instead use Mark All
as Read (cmd-opt-T) from the Message menu. (You don't even have to click on
More.)

As Diane mentioned, however, Entourage will soon get the count wrong again.
It appears to me that the problem is that the app for some reason starts
considering old messages as having not been read, even when they have. :-(
