upgrading -- but on a new machine

Hello,
I just purchased a new computer. I own Office Pro 2000,
and have purchased the upgrade version of Office Pro
2003. I had been assured that all I would need is the
product ID of my existing software, but the box on the
new software says it will search my machine for evidence
that I'm a legal owner. Obviously, such evidence won't
be on the new machine.

If I have to go through the hassle of re-installing
Office 2000 on the new machine, then I'm going to send
2003 back. There's nothing on it that I need. I tried
to ask this question of Microsoft, but they require the
new product key for me to ask the question, and I don't
intend to open the box until I know I'm going to keep the
software.

Anybody know the ins and outs of this?
Thanks much--

Hello, Chris,
Thanks for the info! One more question: it appears that
a "trial" version of Office 2003 Business is on the
machine. Shall I get rid of that, or install over it?
Thanks again--

Hi JCB,
You do not need to install 2000 first, when 2003
says "can't find qualifying product" just remove the 2003
cd, insert the 2000 cd. It should auto run and find the
2000 disk. If not point to it thru browse. When it reads
the qualifying product, reinsert the 2003 cd and voila,
Office should install perfectly.
Keep in mind that if there are programs on 2000 that you
use, you will have to custom install later.
