UPLOADING IMAGES (PHOTOS AND GRAPHICS) TO THE WEB SITE

HOLLOWLEGS

I HAVE JUST CREATED MY FIRST WEB SITE, AND PUBLISHED IT
HOWEVER NONE OF THE IMAGES ARE DISPLAYED ON THE WEB PAGES.
OK SO OBVIOUSLY THEY WERE NOT SENT UP TO THE WEB SITE WHEN IT WAS PUBLISHED.
PLEASE COULD SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO GET THEM THERE USING MS PUBLISHER.

It sounds like you did not upload all the html output. Assuming that you use
Pub 2003 at its default settings, then when you Publish to the Web, an
index.htm file (your home page) and an index_files folder is produced. The
index_files folder is where your other pages and supporting graphics and
images are contained.

Upload both the index.htm file AND the index_files folder and you should be
good to go. If that doesn't work, post the URL of your site and any follow
up questions on the webdesign group: microsoft.public.publisher.webdesign,
and we will see if we can help further.

Thank you, after trying several times I got thru to IX where my web site is
hosted.
they did something and then it was OK.
I have looked at the directory you menioned and it is all there all very
interesting for me being the first time I have produced a web page.

I guess if I add a hyperlink to each photo pointing to its location in the
index_files folder then the full picture will be displayed when the hyperlink
is clicked?

Thanks again

Glad you got it working. It sounds like your host had to set the permissions
to allow for the subfolder index_files folder.

As per your follow up question, the answer is no. When Publisher 2003
produces the html output it actually makes copies of your inserted images in
various formats and sizes with the goal of serving up the best picture
depending on which browser is used...with mixed results. What you are
seemingly wanting to do is use thumbnails linked to full size images.

I have a similar problem with publishing pictures. On the web-preview in
Publisher 2003 I have no problems and the pictures show up fine. However once
uploading the index.html the pictures don't show at all. I did notice the
index-files folder and I added the pictures to this folder, but they still
don't show and I don't know how to upload them (with reference to DavidFs
comments: "Upload both the index.htm file AND the index_files folder and you
should be good to go.")

Could somebody please explain to me in plain English what exactly to do - as
I am a bit of a newcomer. Many thanks in advance - Thomas.

Sometimes you just need to read things several times in order to understand
them, and pay attention to details. For example you do not have an
"index.html" file, or an "index-files" folder...you have an "index.htm" file
and an "index_files" folder. Also you do not add images to the index_files
folder...they are already there. You upload the index_files folder the same
way you uploaded the index.htm file. Just upload it intact.

If you still don't understand then read the following articles:

Reference: Prepare, publish, and maintain your Publisher Web site:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA100947601033.aspx
It is written for Pub 2007, but if you are using IE7 instead of IE6, then
the directions for using Vista also would apply to Pub 2003. FTP and HTTP
uploading has changed with the introduction of IE7 and Vista.

How to trouble-shoot Publisher web upload issues :

If you choose to use FTP uploading then consider downloading and installing
the free FTP client FileZilla:

And as I said earlier, if you have more questions about Publisher webs, then
post in the web group and we will try to help you there:

Well in my version it does say 'index.html' and it it is not an '_' but a '-'
- I'm sorry. Anyway I found out that the issue was just to upload the
'index-files' folder and now it works - so thanks for the help
