(Urgent) MergedField/Update Fields Are Not Working

I received a .dot file that I saved as an .doc file. The file contain
Mergedfields in the document. When I try to update the doc, by righ
clicking and doing "update field" it reverts back to the Mergefiel
code. I even tried converting it back to a normal word doc i
MailMerge and that still doesn't work. Please!! any suggestions. I hav
attached a sample of the problem.

If the merge data source to which the mergefields are linked cannot be
found, then you'll only see the field names, not the data. This is
correct and normal behavior.

The mergefields can be converted to plain text using Ctrl+Shift+F9.
