User with multiple Outlook issues

Hi All,

I have a user who is experiencing several Outlook issues which I will list
below in hopes in getting some ideas on how to solve. The issues are as
follows:

1. Attachments to emails often won’t open. When I try to open them, the
dialog box says “Operation failedâ€. This happens about once a day, sometimes
more. I do not think this is limited to forwarded emails.
2. Emails that I read earlier appear to be blank
3. Outlook keeps telling me that some of my reminders won’t appear

She is using Outlook 2003 on an Exchange 2000 server. Does anyone think that
cleaning the OutlookSecureTempFolder will solve these issues? We also use
Symantec Antivirus but not version 11, which I have read can cause some
issues. Could Symantec have anything to do with the issues she is having? Any
advice would be great.

Thanks,
LaurenM

I have the same problem and I am using Exchange 2003 SP2/Outlook 2003
SP3 also Google Desktop has NOT been installed
on this PC running XP SP2. Lots of people have this problem yet I can
not find a definite answer to this question. May theres some hope for
us out there and some one will have post the anwer to our dilema.

1. You don't mention what type of attachments. If regular documents like
Word, Excel, PDF, .etc, then it is a great idea to check the Outlook Secure
Temp folder. For example, if getting the same filename over and over, it is
possible that the temp folder already has 99 versions of said file. Outlook
can't create more than 99 versions of it in the secure temp folder.

If it is .MSG (Outlook message attachments) file types, then I would suggest
doing a detect and repair of Office/Outlook 2003 as something is funky with
the registry in regards to how MAPI objects are handled.

3. Have you tried starting Outlook with the /cleanreminders command line
switch? (This will delete and rebuild the system folder that tracks
reminders.)

2. For this one I could one of two directions. First thought is that the
display driver is funky and that you are getting strange screen redraw
issues. The other direction is some sort of incompatibility between
applications. For example, Dell ships the MediaDirect software on some its
models and it causes Outlook fits.

I wouldn't necessarily say Symantec is an issue since the site I work for is
using SAV 9/10. (Note: When we install, we don't install the e-mail
protection piece since we run MS Exchange aware antivirus server side. We
don't see the need for the additional protection desktop side.)

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I will give your thoughts a try.

Thanks again!

Hi Neo,

My problems only happend with .MSG file types. By detect and repair
you mean the SCAN OST tool? If so thanks!

Nope. I mean start Outlook and select Help > Detect and Repair or
Add/Remove Programs applet select Microsoft Office and then pick the repair
button (or add/remove button and then pick reinstall).

Oh, I will forwarn you that certain 3rd party internet explorer toolbars
that have desktop search capabilities can block the opening of .MSG (as well
as other) file types. (eg. Google Desktop is one that I ran into a few
weeks back that not only messed wit .msg file attachments, but it also
bonked out media file types like avi, wmv, .etc)
