Using Document Hyperlinks in Email Publications

I thought I had read somewhere that you could use hyperlinks to documents in
your email publications (where the documents are not saved on a web server).
I was under the impression that the documents sort of "upload" and give the
reader the option to "open" or "save" them.

Is there a trick to doing this, if it is possible at all?
