very slow powerpoint 2003

I have powerpoint 2003 on a toshiba satellite laptop,
995MHz 240ram, with windows xp professional. When I load
and edit a powerpoint file, the program takes up 95-99% of
the CPU cycles even when I am doing nothing on powerpoint
itself. The computer is really slow, almost unusable. This
is true even when I am running no other applications
besides powerpoint. When powerpoint is not running, there
is no problem and the computer is fast enough for my uses.
What am I doing wrong or how can I speed it up?

My problem is while the program is running, not start up
or shut down. Powerpoint takes almost all the CPU cycles
while I am inputing text or even when just sitting as I
use another program (eg word)

Ok, I tried all the suggestions in the referenced article
with no change in the powerpoint behavior. Except i
couldn't find out where to turn off compressable
encryption in outlook. Again, my problem is during
powerpoint execution, not loading and unloading. But any
help is appreciated.
