Hi Sierra Echo One-Zero-One,

How is a military org-chart different than "regular" org-charts?

Oh, and I've found some military-related Visio stuff - maybe there's
something here?
http://www.shapesource.com/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=41

Also, if you Google on "visio military org chart", you'll get a bunch of
PDFs from various units, that say they were created with Visio. I wonder if
you could get in touch with these folks and get their shapes?

You can also check for "Military Symbology". One reference is
http://www.military.com/ResourcesSubmittedFiles/Military_Symbols_Guide.pdf

I did start looking at creating these shapes as Visio shapes. They are
basically overlayed shapes which would an ideal topic of a set of Visio
smart shapes. Unfortunately, the sheer number of shapes kept this project
from getting to far. I have several hundred megs worth of clipart in basic
Visio format.

The style of the military symbology is similar to a new topic in Visio 2007;
data graphics. Hey Chris; want a new project. ;-)

Hi Charly Romeo and Juliette Mike ...
Thanks for your response.
The shapes are indeed different from the regular org-charts,
because the rectangles contain information for instance : an E for
Engineers, a cross for Infantry or Medical Corps, depending
on how the cross is drawed, a point for Artillery, etc...
A lot of work if you have to do this manually...

Do you really know what you are asking for? The military symbology stretches
well into the thousands of shapes. The basic concept of the shapes is ideal
for Visio because the shapes are composites of simplier shapes. It's been
awhile since I looked at them, but they breakdown into three main categories
(friend, foe, neutral). That quickly cuts the number of shapes by three. The
shapes also have a frame that indicates details about the unit, similar to
what can be done with Data Graphics.

If you really want to pursue this, I have a couple hundred megs of Visio
stencils that contain the raw shapes that I was tying to whittle down into
groups. One of the military websites hada collection of CGM files that
represented the shapes. Not well done, but they were relatively easy to suck
into Visio and make some very basic Visio shapes.

If one person asks, there is probably ten more lurking in the background
waiting for the answer. So it would be an interesting task to create a Visio
version and see how much can be consolidated into a smaller set of shapes.

Dear all,
I have quit because I found a page explaining the different shapes and
weapons,
it's from from a military WW2 manual. Basicly, it shows almost everything
I needed, so I won't
invent "the warm water" again (or the wheel as they say).
I think I can do with what I found. It's almready online on :

THANKS for trying to help !

I agree to that, so I will be lurking around too,
to see if there is something moving on the subject, just incase...
Thanks again
